On October 3 the police forces freed a man kidnapped on a yacht going from Sweden to Latvia, the police told the press October 5.

A massive operation was launched after 8 a.m. when the hostage tipped off his relatives that he's being taken from Sweden to Latvia against his will.

The Omega counter-terrorist force, as well as the armed forces and Border Guard were involved in resolving the situation.

The 1965-born hostage was freed after being identified in waters near the western coast of Latvia. Institutions cooperated in identifying the yacht in question -- it was about two hours away from the shore -- and ships from the navy and the Border Guard were involved in the rescue operation.

By 1 p.m., the situation was resolved, with the kidnapper, a 1971-born man with no previous criminal record, detained and handed to the police.

According to the police, the hostage was taken against his will from Sweden to Latvia. He knew the suspect previously, and there were no other people on the yacht.

Both of the people involved are Latvian.

This is was first maritime hostage situation in Latvia's history. None of the involved people were injured.
